Sustainability

There are two Building Energy Managers within the team, Adam (pictured right) and Xiang (left). Through the Energy and Carbon Reduction Project (ECRP), Adam and Xiang identify and implement projects focused on reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions across the University.

This is what Adam and Xiang get up to on a typical day in (and out of!) the office…

First thing:

Xiang starts by investigating any error messages from the SIP devices – these log our half-hourly electricity and gas consumption data and send the data back to our system for analysis. Adam checks his emails for any requests for site visits from departments, and both Xiang and Adam ask the Project Managers within Estate Management about progress on current projects.

Morning:

With thousands of submeters recently installed in new buildings, there’s been some teething issues with receiving accurate consumption data, which Xiang tries to resolve.

Both Xiang and Adam love to get out and about during the day, especially as the University estate is so varied with all types and ages of buildings present. This morning, Adam visits the Faculty of Law to gather user feedback on the LED lighting that was recently installed in Lecture Theatre One.

Afternoon:

Xiang and Adam work on producing business cases for potential ECRP projects. For information on how to apply for funding, see https://www.environment.admin.cam.ac.uk/ecrp. This afternoon, Xiang also visits a new capital project, working closely with the design teams to ensure energy efficient or energy saving features are included.

Before we leave:

Both Xiang and Adam look at their diaries for tomorrow and prepare for any meetings that are scheduled. Adam also sets alarms in SystemsLink to monitor overnight activity…he’ll know if you’ve left your lights on!
