Bike repair stations
There are a number of cycle repair stations across the University, these can be found on the University map.
Dr Bike and bike maintenance workshops
Regular Dr Bike sessions take place across the University offering staff free basic bike checks by a trained mechanic. There are also workshops to teach staff how to maintain their own bike to ensure it is safe to use all year round. You can see any of these upcoming sessions on our events page.
Common bike safety issues diagnosed by Dr Bike
You should regularly check whether:
- Your tyres are fully inflated. Soft tyres are more likely to get punctures, and make you slower because of increased resistance against the road.
- Your brakes are sharp enough to stop for any emergency.
- Your brake cables are checked and replaced regularly. Over time, your cables will get rusty inside and reduce efficiency.
- Your lights are fully charged. Either invest in some wind-up lights, or use rechargeable batteries for extra environmental benefit. Try not to only rely on dynamo lights, as these often won’t provide you with light when stopped – for example at traffic lights.
- You have a good-quality cycle lock. Try to lock to something fixed when parking.
