Sustainability

The University has over 13,000 cycle parking spaces across the estate and provides cycle parking at all sites, to find out where to park your bike please visit the University map. Many departments have their own secure storage facilities for staff, please contact the department's reception for more information.

Find out about the proposed cycle parking improvements on the Downing site here.

If you would like to suggest a location for additional or improved cycle parking near your building, please email travel@admin.cam.ac.uk.

Cycle lockers at Park and Rides

A limited number of bike lockers at Park and Ride sites on the fringes of Cambridge have been secured for use by University staff to enable them to be able to park a car and cycle the last few miles to their workplace. This allows staff to build in some daily exercise to their commute, and to contribute towards reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality. In many cases too it’s quicker!

The lockers are at the following Park and Ride sites:
• Babraham Road
• Newmarket Road
• Madingley Road
• Trumpington

The lockers allow staff to leave a bike plus waterproofs, helmets and other accessories in a secure locker overnight. The lockers will be free to use, and will be allocated on an annual basis. For staff who already pay for a locker directly to the County Council, renewal costs will be covered by the University as part of this initiative. To apply for a locker or to request that the renewal costs are funded by the University, please contact travel@admin.cam.ac.uk

Park and Cycle

The Park and Cycle at West Cambridge provides a secure storage facility for your bikes and accessories, allowing you to park your car and make the final part of your journey into the city centre by bike, to reduce the city centre peak hour congestion.

Staff based in the city centre can apply for a parking space and a secure cycle locker. Staff can still use the facility if they wish to jog, walk or take the subsidised Universal bus to complete their journey.  Cars cannot be left overnight except by prior arrangement. Apply online here (http://www.em.admin.cam.ac.uk/operating-estate/facilities-management/car-parking-and-park-cycle).

Cycling the remaining 2 miles to work, after a 12 mile drive, is not only quicker and cheaper, it is also stress free (well mostly) and offsets my carbon footprint by 20 miles a week. As this equates to almost 900 miles per year it also serves as a significant supplement to any fitness routine. Bikes can be left overnight in lockable cabinet storage (it is sensible to also lock your bike within the cabinet), if you don’t have the means to transport them to and from home. The park is well lit and has card entry and exit barrier controls, providing assurance that your bike is secure. Neil Holmes, Building Building Surveyor at Estate Management
