Sustainability

Approximately 4,000 members of the public experienced the many interesting aspects of Eddington on 9 September. Visitors took part in 25 different events which were led by the many different professionals who have all contributed to the development.

Journeys were made into the Eddington of the past, as the archaeology and history of the site was explained to visitors and brought to life in a Roman style street party. Although a nod was given to the past, Eddington is very much a community of the future which boasts many exciting innovations. Tours were given of the energy efficient dwellings, a state of the art waste collection system, the largest rain-water harvesting system in the UK, and the first domestic district heating system in Cambridge.

The level of interaction was high across the day and Project Director of the North West Cambridge Development, Heather Topel commented: “We are extremely proud to have opened Eddington, a new part of Cambridge, to the local community. This was a real celebration of the near-completion of phase one of the North West Cambridge Development, which has seen the creation of 700 homes for University key worker staff, community facilities, 700 market homes, a post-graduate student complex of 325 student rooms, as well as parklands, cycleways and infrastructure.”

“This marked the culmination of over a decade of hard work from thousands of people. The day really illustrated the depth and breadth of our project ethos and the University and City’s joint ambitions to create a sustainable community of exceptional design quality at Eddington.”

“We were thrilled to see so many of our neighbours, friends and supporters exploring Eddington. It was wonderful to see project architects, consultants and partners sharing the detail of their involvement in this exemplar development and having fun.”

For any of you who missed the excitement at Open Eddington, but would like to explore the development, a guide and map have been developed for your use.
