Sustainability

Last month the transport team concluded Let’s Talk Transport! Over the course of the campaign over 200 people took part in webinars and focus groups to help us better understand the challenges staff and students face to travelling sustainably. The information you shared with us demonstrated a lot of interest in improving the bus system in and around Cambridge, that cycle security is a major concern, and that suitable pavements are crucial to enabling people with mobility issues to travel in multi-modal ways.

Over the next two years we will be developing the next iteration of the Transport Strategy which will take effect in 2024. The information gained from the campaign will form the basis of the consultation stage of the next strategy, as well as the questions asked in the 2021 Travel Survey.

Look out for the University’s annual Travel Survey

The 2021 Travel Survey will take place in October this year. The annual survey provides us with invaluable data on what staff and students think about the schemes we already deliver, as well as thoughts about what we could do in the future.

We will also be gathering information about the changes to staff working patterns and student study patterns following the expected return to in-person offices and educational activities.

Support as we return to offices

In order to support those returning to in-person working we are offering Personal Travel Planning to staff. The advisors running the scheme can give you information about all your travel options, including support and initaitives that may have been put in place since you last commuted. Sign up here.

Staff also now have the option to ‘borrow a bike’ and try something new. Maybe a folding bike would allow you to cycle the last couple of miles into work? Or an electric bike might let you do a longer ride without arriving feeling like you’ve already done a day’s work? For £10 a month you could try one out and see if it fits with your life.

Parking update

In Spring 2020 the need for University staff to display a permit when parking in a centrally-managed car parks was temporarily suspended. Not all car parks are open access but there is at least one large car park per site. For example, on West Cambridge, the open-access car park is to the rear of the CAPE building, adjacent to the new Civil Engineering building.

Looking ahead to the next academic year, a 2021/22 permit will be required when the suspension is lifted. Staff anticipating a need to park must apply for a 2021/22 permit online by the deadline which is Tuesday 10 August 2021.
