Sustainability

Travel team in front of smart panel

As part of its commitment to minimise its environmental footprint from transport, and to improve congestion in Cambridge, the University wants to encourage staff, students and visitors to travel more sustainably. The University continues to work to improve sustainable, affordable and convenient ways to travel, and has published a Transport Strategy which sets out the actions the University will take over the next five years.

Smart panels

The roll out of smart panels across the University is continuing with six now operating as part of the first phase of the project. The screens, which display live bus and train times specific to the location, together with road traffic maps, travel and weather updates, have received positive feedback and we are looking at installing the next batch soon. You can find the screens in the Ann McLaren Building at CBC, Lady Mitchell Hall on Sidgwick site, the University Library (staff entrance and locker room), the Institute for Manufacturing on West Cambridge and in the Faculty of Education on Hills Road. You can find out more about smart panels online here. If you think they could be useful in your department, please get in touch with travel@admin.cam.ac.uk.

Survey of the University Bus Service

We are carrying out a review of the Universal Bus Service (operated by Go-Whippet) and would like to hear your views on how it might be improved in the future. If you currently use, have previously used, or would like to use the Universal bus service, you can get involved in two ways:

  1. Complete a short survey by 19 January 2020. All respondents will have the chance to win £100!
  1. Participate in a focus group discussion. The staff focus groups will be held on Tuesday 7 January and Thursday 9 January 2020. Each session will last around 1-1½ hours and will be held at the University. If you would like to take part, please sign up via the survey.

Cycle and Walking Facilities Review

We recently undertook a prioritisation exercise to work out what order we should focus on the University Sites when improving the walking and cycling facilities for staff and students. The exercise included information about the standard and levels of existing facilities, as well as information from the travel survey about where people are likely to walk and cycle more often if facilities improve. As a result of this, the top three sites we will be focusing improvement on are CBC, Sidgwick and Downing. The next step is for us to prepare site-wide improvement plans, which we will be consulting staff and students on soon. If you would like to be included in this consultation then please sign up to the consultation list here.
