Sustainability

As staff and students across the University gear up for a busy time as the new academic term gets underway, it is also an ideal time for planning environmental activities for the year ahead. Fortunately the Environment and Energy section have done lots of the work, by putting together a calendar of events that you can get involved in. This useful list is just a guide – feel free to contact us if you have an idea for your own environmentally-themed event!

Annual timetable

Here are just a few of the events that we are looking forward to this year:

Spotlight on Waste month - November

The focus of this month will be firmly on reducing and reusing waste. There will be waste reduction challenges in departments, we plan to host our second Repair Café and our students will work on making fashion more sustainable.

For tips on what you can do in your department, take a look at our guide for the month.

A full timetable of events will be available in the October edition of Greenlines.

Winter bike to work day – February 8th

We always enjoy the fun and energy of Cycle to Work day, when staff and students share their commute with us. This year we would also like to make people aware of how they can stay safe, stay fit and continue to cycle all year, not just in the summer. There will be cycle safety demonstrations, Dr Bike repairs and competitions for cyclists across the day.

Spotlight on Biodiversity month – April

Our first Spotlight on Biodiversity month takes place in April 2019. Over recent months the Environment and Energy team have worked closely with the University’s ‘Ecological Advisory Panel’ to identify how we will protect and enhance biodiversity on University land, and in our Spotlight On month we will be asking staff and students to do their bit to improve biodiversity. There will be nature walks, citizen science projects, a student nature film competition, nature photography classes and a green film festival.

You too can get involved, for tips on what you can do take a look at our guide for the month

It is going to be a busy year, we hope to see you at least one of our events. If you would like to run an event in your department please contact us. Keep an eye on Greenlines, Facebook and Twitter for further information.
