Sustainability

During April, the spotlight has been on sustainable travel. What has this meant?

The month kicked off with an event at the Department of Chemistry’s Cybercafe, where staff competed to win the ‘folding bike challenge’, while finding out about sustainable travel. At the Department of Engineering and the David Attenborough Building, Dr Bike maintenance sessions proved very popular with staff and students, and E&E provided free bicycle security marking and travel advice. At Greenwich House, staff tried out a popular 'smoothie bike' and raced on a 'scalextric bike', test-drove an electric vehicle, and received travel advice. Several more travel events are still due to take place including at the Maxwell Centre and at the Clifford Albutt Building.

The Environment & Energy website now includes extra information relating to travel, including step-by-step guidance on setting up a pool bike scheme, a training presentation on sustainable travel planning, and a series of travel maps for each of the University’s main sites. There's also a special Spotlight on Travel page with information on promoting sustainable travel in your department or college.

Green Impact teams have also been hard at work promoting sustainable travel, completing the Green Impact ‘travel’ criteria to promote sustainable travel in their department or college. A number of departments, colleges and buildings have spread the sustainable travel message through emails, notices and displays, including the Department of Philosophy; they informed staff about the Cycle to Work scheme and other initiatives using their green display board. The Research Operations Office, meanwhile, put together a fantastic map and collage to show how staff get to work using sustainable modes of travel. At the University Library, the green team decided to ‘practice what they preach’, kitted up their bikes with ‘Cambridge Green Challenge’ bike seat covers and headed out on a staff bike ride to Grantchester!

There is lots more information for University staff about travelling to and at work using sustainable modes on our website
