Sustainability

Following on from our successful ‘Spotlight on Waste’ month in November (see Greenlines issue 58), E&E are shining their spotlight on energy for the whole month of February! There will be a whole range of activities, events, promotions, as well as opportunities for awareness raising and feedback, all geared towards saving energy across the University estate. This will include:

Green Impact events and bonus month

Three Green Impact workshops will be held, on 2 and 3 February, as follows:

  • 2 Feb, 12-1pm University Centre Hicks Room: ‘Getting started, and on to your Bronze and Silver awards’
  • 2 Feb 1pm-2pm University Centre Hicks Room: ‘Gold and Excellence networking event’
  • 3 Feb 12.30-3pm Clinical School Seminar Room 3, ‘Green Impact networking event for Cambridge Biomedical Campus teams’

As well as giving a focus on how to complete the Green Impact energy-related actions, it will also kick start a ‘bonus month’ for the whole month of February! A luxury hamper will be on offer to the team that completes the most Green Impact workbook actions during the month, as well as for one randomly-selected teams which completes at least 2 actions in the workbook during the month!

Website updates

We’ve already put together a Spotlight on Energy webpage, with facts, video guidance, tips on how to save energy in your department, college or lab, and details of energy research taking place at the University. If you have any questions on energy matters, send them in to us and we’ll produce a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section for the website too!

EECs and switch off Fridays

We’ll be sending our updates to our ‘Environment and Energy Coordinators network’ leading up to and during the month, providing ideas and support on a range of energy issues, with a focus on encouraging staff to switch off equipment before the weekend. As part of this we have produced a new set of communication posters which will be distributed to EECs.

Green Labs launch

With a large proportion of energy use at the University taking place within labs, the launch of a new ‘Green Labs’ programme will provide a great opportunity for staff working in or managing labs to understand and share ways they can save energy, money and improve safety through ‘green’ techniques and approaches. As well as a new website to act as a central point of information, a number of events are being held across the University to launch the programme.

Energy Quiz

We’ve put together an Energy Quiz with questions all about energy use at the University and beyond. It’s just for fun, but as an added incentive we’re offering up three ‘OWL home energy monitors’ in a prize draw!

Energy roadshow

During Spotlight on Waste month, we ran a series of roadshows in departments across the University, where we challenged staff on their bin sorting abilities! Keep an eye out for E&E during Spotlight on Energy month in a department near you, or let us know if you are interested in hosting your own energy-themed event at your department - we can help by providing tips and resources.
