Sustainability

LorraineL

What does your position involve?

The Energy Team offers a Service Level Agreement to the University and the 31 Colleges to centrally support energy usage and reduce our carbon footprint. I support the College side with the energy inbox and validate data from supplier invoices with College energy use. I'm stepping in as Fiona Tonyin steps up as Energy Coordinator

What is your (education/qualification) background, and how did you get here?

My background is working mainly in IT in South Africa, banking in the City, and Cambridge in the NHS and the University's HR Department. Since 2015 I've studied project management and sustainability areas of carbon, economic development and SDG reporting. Remote working opened the opportunity for me to work with this great team.

What were you doing before joining the Sustainability Team?

Most recently, caring for my hubby.

What are you looking forward to getting your teeth into in the coming year?

To continue learning from the Sustainability Team and better understand circularity and the waste economy.

Who is your inspirational figure (real or fictional)?

Mandela and his practice of Ubuntu. (Ubuntu is essentially interdependence and how our actions impact others).

Do you have any hobbies?

Our life revolves around family and friends. When I have time, I enjoy reading, walking and upcycling clothes.

What do you think is the biggest environmental challenge?

How big agriculture affects our health, oceans, land and air. In my opinion, biodiversity would serve us better.

What gets you out of bed (and into work) in the morning?

The miracle of nature (have you seen the daffs!), the sunrise when it’s there, and if not, then early morning light returning after the dark winter.

What is your environment-related pet hate?

Waste.

First impressions of Cambridge?

Before my interview, I was impressed to learn that +/- 70% of the University's waste was recycled and thrilled to be accepted as part of this great team.
