Sustainability

Juliet Tye

What does your position involve?

As the Communications and Engagement Assistant (EDI), my role involves assisting the Sustainability Engagement Manager in their current work streams whilst reviewing the accessibility and functionality of the team's current website (the website you are on now!).

What is your (education/qualification) background, and how did you get here?

I have a BSc in Geology from Durham University and a MPhil in Holocene Climates from the University of Cambridge. During my MPhil year I was involved in sustainability initiatives in College and further afield, providing me with my first insight into the Environmental Sustainability Team.

What were you doing before joining the Environmental Sustainability Team?

During my previous role with the team I developed the first Cambridge Colleges Environmental Sustainability Report, which involved collecting data and case studies of sustainable practices across every College. After this project I took a short break, which included taking the Eurostar to Amsterdam for the first time (which I highly recommend before it stops / when they bring it back!).

What are you looking forward to getting your teeth into in the coming year?

Making the website and all communications that from the team more accessible, to allow more people to witness what great sustainability work the team is doing across the University. I am also looking forward to attending the Freshers Fair and hopefully inspiring a new cohort of Cambridge students to get involved in sustainability work whilst they are here!

Who is your inspirational figure (real or fictional)?

My Grandparents have really inspired me through my life, teaching me that perseverance is important and that sometimes you need to keep going or in other words “Reach for the moon and you will land among the stars”.

Do you have any hobbies?

I like walking, running and basically being outdoors!

What do you think is the biggest environmental challenge?

Getting everyone to work together for a common goal.

What gets you out of bed (and into work) in the morning?

Knowing that what the whole team is working on, will help everyone at the University live a more sustainable life.

What is your environment-related pet hate?

'Fast Fashion', the rate at which fast fashion brands cycle around new trends and the rates in which consumers buy is not sustainable!

Cambridge sustainability top-tip.

The team has recently assisted on rolling out a new waste management system for all University buildings, so my current top tip would be to read the new signs and make sure you are putting items in the right bin!
