As part of our commitment to carbon reduction, the University has guidelines for how to travel on business more sustainably.

A short video summary has just been published to introduce the guidelines.

Approved by University Council, the Sustainable Business Travel guidelines lay out practical considerations when planning and undertaking travel with the aim of encouraging lower-emission travel modes and reducing non-essential business travel (particularly air travel).

The guidelines apply to all University staff and all students who undertake travel as part of their learning or research and include:

  • How to consider whether travel is essential
  • A hierarchy of preferred travel modes, by carbon emissions
  • Encouraging taking the train to UK destinations and to European destinations that can be reached by rail within six hours from London terminals
  • Setting out the use of carbon offsetting of emissions from travel by plane, where travel is essential
  • The benefits of attending meetings and conferences virtually
