Sustainability

In the September edition of Greenlines we profiled a number of student societies who are working to make the world a better place in every respect. Getting involved in these societies will give you a chance to develop your skills and to meet like-minded people.

Student Community Action (SCA)

Student Community Action organises volunteering opportunities for students in and around Cambridge. The aim is to do social good while fostering a closer connection between students in Cambridge and the local community.

We run one-on-one volunteering projects, and depending on your interests and availability, you could be paired up with a child, young adult or elderly person and spend one or two hours a week helping them with homework, social skills, languages or just keeping them company.

We also run group projects. You might find yourself doing arts and crafts with kids at our Craft Room project, playing an instrument in a singalong at a care home with Betty’s Musical Entertainment Group or helping out with sports and games at a youth club through Bounce!

If you’re interested, drop in to our office at 10 Pembroke Street for a cup of
tea or email us at mail@cambridgesca.org.uk to chat.

Cambridge Food Security Forum

The Cambridge Food Security Forum is an interdisciplinary group dedicated to action toward achieving a sustainable food system. Food Security addresses how to ensure all people have access to safe and healthy food. Our current food system is extremely flawed; one in eight people suffers from malnutrition while one third of the food produced in the world goes to waste. Meanwhile, the population continues to increase and the climate conditions for crop plants are changing. The challenges of achieving food security are daunting! The members of the Food Security Forum are passionate about tackling these challenges both locally and globally.

The Forum is more than a student society – it is a network and a community. Our events this year will range from intellectual discussions and meeting with experts to fun excursions and casual socials. Together we will glean vegetables from Cambridgeshire farms, collaborate with local businesses, live stream to worldwide audiences, and even pitch ideas to policy makers and investors. No matter what you study or what part of the food system interests you, you belong with us! We can’t wait to welcome you to the team. Please get in touch by emailing contact@cfsf.co.uk.
