Sustainability

Cambridge cyclists

The New Year has already been a busy one for the University’s Travel and Transport team! Read on for a quick summary of what we’ve been up to so far.

Smart panels

We now have eight smart panels in place across the University and we are currently looking into installing further panels in six more departments. The smart panels support sustainable travel by displaying Smart Cambridge’s live, rather than scheduled, transport information.

Cycling updates

The first few cycle maintenance workshops of 2020 have been scheduled. These are small workshops where you can learn the basic cycle maintenance skills needed to keep your bike roadworthy. If you are interested and would like to host one at your department, please let us know at travel@admin.cam.ac.uk. The next workshop will be held from 6pm-8pm on 26 February at Outspoken Cycles, The Bike Depot, 140 Cowley Road, CB4 0DL. Sign up here.

We have been working on making further improvements to Pedl, the pool bike app which has been launched at Greenwich House. As a result of user feedback, developments are being made to make the process quicker. We are also working to begin testing the app at the Maxwell centre.

We’ve had constructive meetings at the Clinical School, Geography Department, Judge Business School and HR at Old Schools about improving cycling facilities. The Cycle and Walking Improvement plan for Downing site is going through final approvals before the site user consultation period begins in the next couple of months. Drop in sessions will be open to any site users who want to hear more information about the plan. Dates for these sessions will be publicised in the next issue of Greenlines so watch this space.

Pedestrian and cycling updates

The trial Vivacity sensors are now live and undergoing validation on the West Cambridge site. These will provide information about how pedestrians and cyclists use the site infrastructure. We are currently assessing the sensor system to see if it can offer the University valuable information to aid in spacial and travel planning.

Bus updates

The bus user consultation for the Universal bus service review has now finished so thank you to everyone who took part. The results will be used to inform our proposals for the future bus service.

Car parking updates

The car parking permit allocation policy review is still ongoing, a programme of eight focus groups is almost complete with two general staff lunchtime sessions left on 30/01/20 and 11/02/20. These sessions aim to establish the issues with the way car parking permit allocation happens across the University at the moment so we can take them into account when the new policy is written. If you would be interested in taking part in either of these events then please book via the links below:
