Greg Nolan has joined the Environment and Energy section as the new Energy Manager. As is tradition, Greg has answered our questionnaire so that you can get to know what he does.

1.            Name:  Greg Nolan         

 

2.            Position: Energy Manager

 

3.            What does this position entail? I am responsible for utilities procurement and budget management to ensure the University is achieving legal compliance and fulfilling its statutory and regulatory obligations and own environmental aspirations in relation to energy and carbon.  I also lead on the identification and implementation of measure to reduce water consumption.

 

4.            What is your (education/qualifications) background and how did you get here? I have a Undergraduate Masters in Environmental Sciences from the University of Southampton, I hold Practitioner IEMA membership and have over 10 years’ experience working in the Environment and Energy Sector. I’ve previously worked as a private sector consultant for NHS Trusts and Government Departments working on Carbon and Energy management and within a Local Authority as a Carbon Reduction Officer managing the Council’s utilities and reporting on Carbon and GHG emissions.

 

5.            What were you doing before joining the Environment and Energy section? Most recently I was working as a Senior Energy Consultant at a private sector consultancy, Leading on ESOS compliance, Energy efficiency projects for schools and sustainable development support to Local Planning Authorities.

 

6.            What is your proudest professional achievement? There are a few – developing the UKs first accredited Continued Professional Development training course on the Carbon Reduction Commitment, developing the first carbon footprint and Reduction Strategy for several NHS Trusts, Leading RB Greenwich participation in the Big London Energy Switch (collective switching scheme) and project managing a LED Lighting and Solar PV installation project at a school in Northamptonshire through SALIX finance

 

7.            What are you most looking forward to getting your teeth into in the coming year? I’m looking forward to getting to understand how the University, its building and departments operate and exploring ways we can improve the visibility of energy use across the estate, so departments can better manage their energy use.

 

8.            What gets you out of bed (and into work) in the morning? The Alarm on my phone and a bicycle normally.

 

9.            What is your environment related pet hate? Fluorescent lights installed in brand new buildings! It’s the 21st century.. go LED!!

 

10.          What is your favourite green gadget? My bike I suppose (old school)

 

11.          What do you think is the biggest environmental challenge? Convincing people to make different personal choices, which are more sustainable, but not necessarily the quickest, cheapest or easiest option.

 

12.          Who is your inspirational figure (real or fictional)?  Real = Geraint Thomas, Fictional = Tyrion Lannister.

 

13.          Do you have any hobbies? Tennis, Cycling, Skiing

 

14.          First impressions of Cambridge? It’s a very attractive city with great architecture, but the traffic is awful.
