Sustainability

During spotlight on waste month E&E organised a trip for our Environment and Energy Coordinators to visit the Waste Management Park managed by AmeyCespa to see where our waste is collected and sorted.

The aim of the trip was to give us an understanding of what happens to our waste after it leaves the University estate, so that we can go back to our departments and be a champion for recycling, with full confidence about what can and cannot be recycled.

I think most of us found the scale of the operation to be both awesome and revolting as it shows just how much rubbish we produce! Most shocking was the clear sound of glass breaking as the trucks with landfill waste emptied. Glass can be recycled and should go into the mixed recycling bin. Although some items can be reclaimed from landfill waste it is rather minimal.

Take part in our spotlight on waste month and take action to reduce waste in your department: http://www.environment.admin.cam.ac.uk/…/re…/spotlight-waste.

See behind the scenes at how our waste is recycled!
