Sustainability

Initiated by the University’s Living Laboratory for Sustainability, our bin audits give us valuable data on how good the University is at recycling and where we need to improve our sustainability performance. Students and staff will be joined by the University’s Environment and Energy team and, decked out in stylish safety suits and masks, we will be assessing what waste the University disposes of!

Last year, the data collected enabled the Environment and Energy section to identify what proportion of each waste type by weight was found in the general and recycling bins, and whether it was in the correct bin. The results showed a disappointing amount of recyclable paper and cardboard in the general waste bins and, as waste continues to be a hot topic at the University, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled this year to see whether our recycling habits have improved. The audit provides valuable feedback on the University’s waste performance, and always turns up some surprising wastes too!

If you’re passionate about environmental issues, interested to see how your University can improve its waste management, or just keen to gain some practical auditing experience, then come along to our session. Participants become an Associate of the University’s Living laboratory for Sustainability for taking part in research into the University’s sustainability!

The Bin Busting Session will take place on Friday 29th November. If you're interested, join us at any time from 12.30 to 14.30 on the Sidgwick Site's car park on Sidgwick Avenue, behind the Economics building. You don't need to bring anything (although pelas wear closed shoes), and a full briefing will be given. Click here to ask us any last minute queries!
