Trinity College
During August a number of changes to key routes and communities will be made to reduce the amount of traffic and create more space for people. Led by the Greater Cambridge Partnership, these changes are the result of feedback from multiple stakeholders including the University.

Tranche 1 changes to be implemented during August 2020 include:

  • Silver Street: extending the bus gate restriction to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Carlyle Road: a point closure to prevent through traffic movements. Access will still be possible for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Luard Road: a point closure to prevent through traffic movements. Access will still be possible for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Newtown Area: various point closures to prevent through traffic movements combined with a reversal of the one-way flow in Norwich Street.
  • Nightingale Avenue: a point closure to prevent through traffic movements. Access will still be possible for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Storey’s Way: closure of the existing width restriction to all motor vehicles.

Further changes will be made later in the year and we will provide further details once plans are available. Alternatively, please keep an eye on the GCP website.

The Fendon Road roundabout will open from Friday 31 July and is the first of its kind in the UK. Based on a Dutch roundabout, it features priority crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. Motorists must give way to cyclists and pedestrains at the roundabout, but cyclists and pedestrians must slow down before crossing to check that vehicles are stopping for them.
