Sustainability

This month, across the operational estate, departments examined energy use and looked at ways to reduce consumption. The Environment and Energy section (E&E) held a number of events to raise awareness.

Gurdon Institute tour

Our first event was a tour and talk in the Gurdon Institute. Kathy Hilton and Diane Foster were the hosts and they did an excellent job describing the journey to energy efficiency in their building. The tour that followed gave the attendees a chance to see some of the technical improvements that had been but it was the commitment to energy efficiency among the institute’s staff that most impressed. Posters, stickers and the tablet tracking energy use make the issue of energy efficiency visible to all. As the team in the Gurdon strive to reach the target of four million kWh saved, it is very clear that their approach is working and through events like this, they are inspiring others to follow their example.

Thermal Thursday

University staff showed their colourful side on 24 November for ‘Thermal Thursday’. The event was an opportunity to tell staff about the University’s Thermal Comfort Policy.

Participants sent in photographs of themselves and E&E will be judging who had the best outfit. The winner of the individual prize will receive a solar charger with runners up receiving chocolates. Winners will be announced on 30 November.

Staff made a great effort as you can see from our gallery.

Knowledge exchange workshop

We are very lucky to have a strong network of EECs and Green Impact teams across the University working to make our organisation more sustainable and this event was an opportunity to bring all of these people together to share ideas and support one another. Attendees spoke about their challenges and successes and lots of excellent tactics and ideas were shared. We look forward to seeing the collaborations that arise from this event.

Building Managers Workshop

This workshop provided an opportunity for Building Mangers to learn what support is available to them if they would like to initiate energy efficiency improvements in their building. The event was hosted by the E&E Building Energy Managers, Adam Fjaerem and Xiang Cheng who gave examples of what has worked well in energy efficiency projects in the University and what the University needs to do to meet its environmental sustainability targets.
