Sustainability

In August 2016 the Environment and Energy section launched an Equipment Replacement Programme, which provides funding for the replacement of old ultra-low temperature freezers with new, energy efficient models. The scheme has already proven to be a great success, with forty applications from across the University estate to date. Building on this, the Environment and Energy section has expanded the Programme to encompass drying cabinet replacement.

Drying cabinets are highly energy intensive pieces of equipment; the average cabinet consumes approximately twice the electricity usage of the average household*! However, a new range of drying cabinets, developed with input from the University’s own Department of Chemistry, incorporates a number of energy saving features and uses less than half the amount of electricity consumed by a standard model.

The Equipment Replacement Programme can provide 50% of the cost of one of these new drying cabinets, up to a maximum of £2,000 per unit. To apply for this assistance departments must provide evidence that they are replacing a cabinet of five or more years of age which will be appropriately disposed of.

For more information, come along to our Drying Cabinet Drop-in Session in the Department of Chemistry. It will be from 10.00am to 1.00pm on Tuesday 4 April. Refreshments will be provided.
