Sustainability

We have just added some new ‘pictorial’ bin labels to our website following feedback from staff that the existing ‘infographic’ labels, developed by our waste contractor Mick George, were not intuitive for users, and the icons were hard to interpret from a distance. We therefore have new ones which display large, simple pictures of common items which go in each bin. Initial feedback is very positive! Why not print them out, trial them on your bins and let us have your feedback. Labelling of bins is a requirement of Green Impact under criteria B016, and it costs the University twice as much to dispose of each kilogram of general waste compared to a kilogram of recycling, so it’s important to get it right!

Don’t forget, we also have a guide to waste & recycling which gives useful tips on improving recycling in your department, and the Environment & Energy section are able to help your department out with audits of your waste and recycling arrangements. Feel free to get in touch with any questions about recycling, or if you have other ideas for new posters, stickers and labels.
