Sustainability

City centre traffic lights

Transport is a hot topic at the moment, with the recent COP 26 conference highlighting the impact on the environment of the ways we move people and goods around the world. Here in the Cambridge region, there are two consultations which aim to gather public opinion on how the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) can improve transport across the region. The University will respond to these consultations, but you are encouraged to as well, because every voice matters. The outcomes of these consultations will be instrumental in shaping how our local authorities respond to the transport issues we are facing, and the climate impacts these have.

Making Connections consultation

The Greater Cambridge Partnership launched its City Access consultation ‘Making Connections’ earlier this month. The consultation identifies proposals for transforming public transport, cycling and walking and reducing pollution and congestion. You can have your say on the consultation via Consult Cambridgeshire.

The proposals include:

  • A new bus network, offering more frequent services, with longer operating hours, more rural connections, and new routes into growing employment sites.
  • Creating space for improvements to walking and cycling and our public spaces
  • Options for raising money to pay for improvements to the transport network.

Local Transport and Connectivity Plan – A regional approach

The public are also invited to have their say on a plan to shape the future of transport in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The Local Transport and Connectivity Plan is being developed by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority and is a refresh of the existing Local Transport Plan, first adopted in January 2020. It will set the ambition and objectives for better travel and connectivity in the region as well as measures to decarbonise our local transport network.

New report on climate change in Cambridge and Peterborough

Cambridge and Peterborough Independent Commission on Climate have published their recommendations report on tackling climate change in the region. The CPCA have published their full recommendations report on Climate Change; Fairness, nature and communities: addressing climate change in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The report sets out a series of recommendations on topics including transport, waste, buildings, energy, nature and water. The Commission has once again raised the urgent need to reduce Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s greenhouse gas emissions, which are almost 25% higher per person than the UK average, and to warn that the regions ‘allowed’ share of emissions to 2050 could be exhausted within as little as six years if no action is taken. This full report will now be shared with Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority and its constituent councils for consideration and a response will be made in November 2021.
