Sustainability

In recent days, e-bikes have sprung up across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, offering a carbon neutral option for residents, staff and students. The scheme, run by Voi, offers free e-bike rides to NHS and Emergency Service workers but there are also additional e-bikes across Cambridge available to rent. Find out more about the scheme, including where you can find the bikes, on the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority website.

Here at the University we've also been busy supporting sustainable transport options. Three new electric cargo bikes have been received by University departments to give more flexible, zero-emission and quicker deliveries of goods around the city.

The sturdy and stylish bikes have been secured through a Department for Transport and Energy Saving Trust initiative. The bid was a partnership between the Greater Cambridge Partnership, Cambridge City Council and the University, and in total will bring 30 new e-cargo bikes onto the streets of Cambridge. This will help to reduce short trips and deliveries being made around the city by less sustainable modes of transport.

The bikes can carry a load up to 100kg in weight, and the lockable box can carry a volume of 265l of cargo.

There may be further opportunities to secure electric cargo bikes through future initiatives so if any departments are interested please contact travel@admin.cam.ac.uk
