Sustainability

Many of us do not travel just to and from work, we also travel as part of our work, either within the city or further afield. Business travel, be it for research or other work, is a part of University life but it is not without its environmental impact.

Of all travel modes, domestic flights are by the far the most carbon intensive method of travel. Per passenger kilometre, a domestic flight emits over five times as much carbon dioxide as travelling by rail*. The University has a goal of reducing emissions from flights by 25% by 2020.

When you have a journey to make ask yourself, could this journey be made by bus or rail or do I need to travel at all? The University’s video conferencing facilities  will allow you to attend meetings or network in a way that saves cost and hours spent travelling. With many conferences and meetings incorporating a digital aspect, future events may become more accessible than ever.

Sustainable travel options for international travel can be more complicated but within Europe websites like Loco2 and seat 61 are making cross border travel easier than ever. You could travel in a way that minimises carbon dioxide emissions but also allows you to work in comfort. It’s a win, win.
